LoFi is short for "low-fidelity," and is a genre of instrumental music that has exploded in popularity in recent years. The genre is characterized by its laid-back and relaxing vibe, heavy use of sampling, and warm, crackling sound reminiscent of vinyl records.

The origins of LoFi can be traced back several decades to the era of cassette tapes and four-track recorders. In those times, LoFi was not necessarily a deliberate genre, but a result of the limited technology that was available to independent musicians.

In the 1980s and 1990s, a wave of indie rock bands began to embrace the LoFi aesthetic, creating music that was intentionally raw, unpolished, and often recorded in home studios.

Fast forward to today, LoFi is widely associated with Hip Hop and considered a subgenre under it. Producers like Madlib, J Dilla, and Oh No popularized the genre in the 2000s, and when music streaming became available, instrumental LoFi quickly grew in popularity and started dominating our playlists.
