Despite recent strides in female representation within the music industry, there is more work to do. Only 19.5% of songwriters and a mere 6.5% of producers are women. At Soundtrap, we want to continue driving the momentum for change. We are on a mission to democratize music creation, making it accessible to everyone in the world. Since 2013, our simple yet powerful product has resonated with women music makers. Their presence on Soundtrap has grown from 24% in 2013 to 34% in 2024, and we are committed to amplifying their voices until we see more equitable representation in our user base.

This International Women’s History Month, we teamed up with multi-platinum artist Tinashe to unveil an exclusive sound pack. Featuring 25 royalty-free samples of her signature vocals, this pack aims to empower more young girls and women to explore the world of music production and songwriting. By offering the tools and inspiration they need, this is an invitation for music makers of all levels to #CreateWithTinashe and unlock their musical voices.

“I'm excited to see more people feeling like they can make music on their own, especially young women.” - Tinashe

“I wanted to create something that felt uniquely me, and I felt that there is no better instrument for me to use than my voice to create that,” Tinashe says. “I'm encouraging producers to chop them up, pitch them up, slow them down, speed them up – use them in different ways. The sky's the limit in terms of how you can flip them.”

To bring this campaign to life, we partnered with a network of influential music producers and songwriters to create their own tracks using Tinashe’s vocal samples. Not only is this a celebration of the talented women driving change in music, but an opportunity to spark new collaborations and support among other women in their communities.

“We want to evolve music creation through groundbreaking technology. This is deeply rooted in the belief that accessible tech will bring more voices and cultural influences to the scene,” says Vanja Steinholtz, Head of Audio Content at Soundtrap. “Diversity and inclusion drives innovation, and shapes the music we hear today.”

Soundtrap launched in 2013 as the first web-based music recording studio. By leveraging the power of technology to democratize music making, we are empowering musicians of all levels to create, collaborate, and share their music effortlessly and affordably, regardless of their location or financial resources.

Through Soundtrap for Education, we are dedicated to expanding the accessibility of music making and podcasting to the next generation. This year as part of International Women’s History Month and our ongoing commitment, we are providing complimentary seats to our longtime partners, Girls Make Beats and Women’s Audio Mission, to empower women and young girls with more resources and opportunities to thrive in the industry.

About Women’s Audio Mission

Women’s Audio Mission is a San Francisco-based recording studio and nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of women and gender-expansive people in music/audio production and creative technology, fields in which they are critically underrepresented. WAM uses music and media arts training, mentorship, and conferences to serve over 2,000 women, girls, and gender-expansive people annually in order to inspire them to amplify their voices and become the innovators of tomorrow.

WAM’s award-winning curriculum weaves art and music with science, technology, and computer programming and works to close the critical gender gap in creative technology careers. Additionally, our studios are the only professional recording studios in the world specifically built and run entirely by women and gender-expansive staff.

"Fewer than 5% of the people creating and shaping all of the music, messages, sound, and media in the soundtrack of our lives are women or gender-expansive,” said Terri Winston, Founder of Women’s Audio Mission. “This deeply affects the sounds and messages we consume every day. WAM has been changing the face of sound for over 20 years, providing over 20,000 women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals with free music production training, mentorship, career counseling, and job placement in the only professional recording studios in the world built and run entirely by women."
